PNG is the right choice when image quality is non-negotiable: screenshots with text, logos, icons with transparent backgrounds, and any image that will be edited again (lossless means no generation loss). The trade-off is larger file sizes — a PNG screenshot can be 3–5× larger than the same image saved as JPG.

JPG dominates for photography. The lossy compression algorithm is optimized for the gradual color transitions in photos, making it extremely efficient. At 80–90% quality, JPG images are visually indistinguishable from the original while being 60–80% smaller than equivalent PNGs. For any photo going on a website or shared via email, JPG is the standard choice.

WEBP is the modern default for web use. Google designed it to replace both PNG and JPG — and it succeeds at being smaller than both while maintaining equivalent quality.
