The tool works in three directions, which covers almost every real situation. Forward discount takes an original price and a percentage off to give the sale price. Reverse mode starts from the price you actually paid and tells you what the original price must have been — useful for checking whether an advertised discount is genuine. Markup mode is for sellers: enter your cost price and desired markup to find the selling price, along with the resulting profit and margin.

A common point of confusion is the difference between markup and margin. Markup is calculated on the cost price, while margin is calculated on the selling price, so a 25% markup actually equals a 20% margin.
