About BMI Calculator
BMI is a quick screening tool used worldwide to assess whether a person's weight is appropriate for their height. Developed in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet, it became a standard health metric in the 1970s when American physiologist Ancel Keys popularized it for population studies.
While BMI is convenient for large-scale health studies, it has real limitations for individuals. A professional bodybuilder and a sedentary person of the same height and weight would have the same BMI, despite very different health profiles. Waist-to-height ratio and body fat percentage are more accurate measures, but BMI remains the most accessible starting point.
If your BMI falls outside the normal range, it's worth discussing with a doctor — especially before making significant changes to diet or exercise. BMI is a starting point for conversation, not a diagnosis.
